Teaching
I approach music education from the perspective of the student and their goals and needs. Every student is unique and is learning for different reasons; whether this is to learn a new skill, taking music examinations or just to have fun and enjoy music-making.

Juliana runs workshops regularly at the Becton Centre and Sheffield Children's Hospital in electronic music. Past workshops have included:
Film scoring- Using a short clip from a film and creating foley (sound effects), the music score, and voiceovers using everyday objects, instruments and logic pro. Students are able to work through the process of creating a film soundtrack, and then will have a recording of their clip and sountrack at the end. They will then be able to watch the original soundtrack at the end, to see how their creation compares.
Looping- Using the Boss RC-505 loop station to create their own ambient tracks. This can include going out and taking field recordings to use in their compositions, and using synths/effects, instruments and found sounds/objects.
Drum Machine/Sampler Workshops- Using the KOII sampler to create their own beats, and then making an arrangement using fade ins and effects.
Juliana runs fun and accessible improvisation workshops, exploring the creative process behind her improvising ensemble Emergence Collective. This approach is heavily influenced by minimalism, and involves using short, repeated patterns to build up a piece of music.
These workshops explore the importance of listening and responding to each other, leaving space, as well as building confidence in improvising and performing music.
These workshops can be tailored to all ages and abilities, and can be delivered to musicians and non-musicians. They can also be delivered in conjuction with a performance.
If you would like to discuss options regarding these workshops, please email soundsofemergence@gmail.com.
Testimonials
"I've only had a couple of lessons with Juliana so far but Juliana is a lovely, gentle teacher and so very patient. She is well prepared for the lesson and I don't feel rushed. I'm already learning so much from her and just as importantly I'm enjoying it" (adult student)
"We’re really happy with the progress that our daughter has made, the enjoyment she gets from playing, and the way she just picks up her recorder for fun several times a day; thanks again for all your work!" (parent)
"My daughter loves learning the piano with Juliana. She has come on leaps and bounds since beginning her lessons and gains much enjoyment from playing the piano" (parent)
"I really enjoyed your sessions, music and movement really are powerful tools. Coming from the visual arts I really learned a lot yesterday watching your interactions and how you build on music. I liked how your musical ear meant that the children were playing along with you and how by dining to them you really included them. A really quiet group but you sparked joy in them all. " (early years workshop feedback)
"Juliana has been teaching our 8 year old daughter for around a year and we're so pleased to have found her. She enjoys her lessons and always looks forward to going. Juliana is patient, enthusiatic, reliable and encouraging. There is a clear structure to the lessons, and we can see the progress that is being made, and the plan for how this will continue. The lessons offer a mix of practice, theory and some fun games to encourage listening to different notes. We're really pleased and can't recommend Juliana enough." (parent)
